The strained relations between the Holy See and the Government resulted in a curious .situation on St. Peter’s Day. it hits been the custom to- illuminate the Church of St. Peter’s ill Rome with thousands of torches and lanterns on this day, but, owing to the dispute with the Italian Government, the Pope has cancelled the illuminations.
Signor Mussolini has countered this •T : '• hv : organising a spectacle in honour of the Apostle#., including a great fireworks display at the Pincian Park, which the Pope can witness,, if he chooses, as the windows of his private apartments overlook the Pincian Hill.
