LAiNG’S Is IN THE £ TAX, PASSED. QUICKLY BY (ASSEMBLY'. (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, June 50. Although the Legislative Council's overwhelming defeat of the Emergency Taxation Bill is on everybody's lips, there is still a great deal of anxiety in regard to the Government's next move.

Steps were taken in the Assembly to-day to re-enact the Prevention and Relief of Unemployment Act, providing for one shilling in the pound tax on wages, which measure had lapsed. The Opposition assented to the Bill. The measure was. passed through all

stages. '1 lie measure also levies a sliding in the pound on the net assessable income of every company. It also extends the period of the Public Service Salaries Reduction.

STATE GOVERNOR. A SUGGESTION OFFERED. SYDNEY, June 30. The Premier, Mr Lang, -.has so far ■made no statement of the Government’s intentions. 'He has been absent from Parliament nearly the whole day. It is reported that 'Mr Lang Las received a letter from the State Governor suggesting a round-table <oni'erence of all the parties to overcome the present impress. It is understood the Premier adopted the attitude that the Governor's duty was to accept the advice of his Ministers and not to offer] advice. Well informed persons believe Lang will now ask the Governor for additional appointments to the Legislative Council, whereby the Government can gain a majority in that chamber. |
