BOXER’S DEATH

MYSTERY AT WAITAKI. (By Telegraph —Ter Tress Association) OAMARC, June 27. When Edgar-John Jamieson, aged 22 was found dead outside his hut at the Waitaki Hydro Works on Thursday morning, it was thought that his death was the result of heart failure.

At the inquest, however, yesterday, a doctor gave evidence that death was the result of haemorrhage of the brain, resultant upon a blow on the head. Witness said be could not give indication as to tbe type- of the blow. A verdict was returned, in accordance with the medical evidence. Rumours have been rife at the liydr:works regarding Jamieson’s death, and acting upon instructions of the district headquarters at Tiinaru, Sergeant Hall and a plain-clothes constable left for the works this morning.

The deceased was an amateur boxer, and it is thought that he might have received a blow during a recent bout. When the hotly was found outside the hut, is was frozen stiff, death having occurred some hours previously. For the investigations being carried out by the police, Sergeant Hall, of Oannini, accompanied by Constable Trctliewcy, left for Waitaki to make full enquiries. The injury to Jamieson was a severe blow on the temple, causing haemorrhage, which proved fatal. Jamieson occupied one of the hutments at the camp and when found was lying outside the door. He was an early riser and one opinion advanc d at Awakino is that lit; fell and struck his head when leaving the hut. The verdict at the inquest, however, has raised the question of foul play and with the police investigating the matter many rumours are cum lit as to the cause of his death.

NO FOUL PLAY. OAMARU, June 2*. Regarding the death of Jamieson, :tl Waitaki hydro works, the police hate returned to-day from the hydro works, aud it is understood that exhaustive enquiries have failed to reveal anything to justify further action, it being taken as conclusive that the injury was received through a friendly boxing bout. The rumours were probed to tbe bottom without at ail.
