BOXING TOURNEY

AT THE SWIMMING BATHS. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Favoured with a fine afternoon on Saturday the Hokitika Boxing Association presented a very enjoyable programme for their boxing tourney. Thee was a capital attendance, upward of 500 being present, including quite a number of the fair sex. The “ring” bad been erected on the floor of the emptied baths, and with the raised seating accommodation of the . baths enclosure gave spectators a splendid view of the various bouts. While daylight- lasted there was the innovation of outdoor contests by the natural light, while as the evening shades drew near a powerful electric globe gave plenty of light for the concluding contests, which were over just before 5.30 p.m.

Mr F. McGregor during the proceeding thanked the audience for tiieir attendance, and apologised for the absence of Mr A. Beban who was to have judged part of the events, and paid a special tribute of thanks to Mr Frank O’Xeill who acted as judge throughout the whole of the contests, and whose decisions met with unanimous approval. The following bouts took place:— MOSQUITO. Mitchell (Dobson), 5.12 defeated Boyd (Rimn) 6.1, in three rounds of 14 minutes. Throughout the bout -Mitchell hart the upper hand and before the end of the third round the referee stopped the lads, awarding me win to Mitchell. BABY. Henderson (Ruatnpu) 4.7, heat Howat (Knnieri) 4.6. The winner had a larger reach and though bis smaller opponent put up a game defence ; be bad to give way to his opponent. MOSQUITO Final.-—The final between Mitchell 0.12 and Henderson 5.9, wlm bad a bye in the first round, was very onesided and Mitchell driving his opponent all round the ring in one big attack, was awarded the bout before the first round ended. FLYWEICHT. M-organ (Hokitika) 7.3. I«eat Vincent ( doss) 7.0. Morgan bad a little the best of each of the three rounds and won easily at the finish. Atkinson (Hokitika) 7.9, beat Mclntosh (R.uatapu) 7.9. The winner had a considerable advantage in reach, and scored steadily winning easily. Final.—Atkinson heat Morgan. The winner had easily the best of the bout. He showed excellent style;, though be did not appear to put enough weight into bis blows. FEATHERWEIGHT.

Brice 8.13, boat Freitas (Hokitika) .B.lo.,,eftrst-eronml was a poor one. In the second Brice had easily the -lead, which he improved considerably in the third, and there was no doubt aV”'t the award in his favour. McPhee ('Wallsend) 8.12, beat Ritchie (Koiterangi) 8.12. This proved a very one-sided contest and though Ritchie stood Up well, the referee stopped the contest in the middle of the second round to prevent unnecessary punishment. The final was fought between McPliee and Brice, the former winning. In the first round Bice had a slight advantage. The second round was brighter but Brice lost points through his rights going round the head. McPhee showed up in the lost round anu won a good contest. NO CONTESTS. In the fly, paper and welter weights there were no contests. LIGHTWEIGHT, Steele (Greymouth) 9.3, beat 5 hutt’e. worth (Greymouth) 9.10, in three round of two minutes. In the first round Steele had a slight advantage, while Shuttleworth appeared to even up in the second. The third round was a good one, but Steele had some advantage at the finish and was awarded the bout. Hobson (Greymouth) 9.12, beat Shuttleworth (Greymouth) 9.12. Hobson had an advantage in each round and won with a good margin. Final.—Hobson defeated Steele. In the first round the scoring was fairly even, but in the second Steele went down and took a count of nine (the only count of the afternoon) though lie appeared to he only taking a spell. In the third round Hobson bad a substantial advantage and’ was awarded the bout and section. SPECIAL BOUT. Lightweight, 6 rounds of two minutes. Wright (Hokitika) 9.12 and Gillingham (Greymouth) 10.3. This proved a very attractive bout. In the first three rounds Gillingham appeared to the advantage, but in the two last ones Wright was improving his position. The final round was of a bright nature, both using forcing tactics, but Wright was gathering points and when the referee announced a draw, it proved a very poijular decision. SPECIAL MIDDLEWEIGHT BOUT Croft (Greymouth) 11.7, l>eat H. Lister (Greymouth 11.9, in four rounds of two minutes. This povided a very attractive finale. Both men attacked smartly and there were some excellent rallies, both exchanging freely with good results, though Croft who was the taller of the two, gradually improved his position, and at the conclusion was crowned the winner after an excellent exhibition.
