WESTLAND ROADS

GOVERNMENT GRANTS. - Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., has received the following letter from the Minister of Public Works :—With reference to your representations on behalf of the Westland County Council concerning the authorisation of Government grants in respect of certain works, I have now to advise as follows: One Mle Road—£32 (£1 for £1). Authority in this amount is being issued, and formal notification should ■shortly reach the Council. A’rthurston Road—£lso (£1 for £1). Satisfactory proposals have already been received from the Council, but as matters in connection with this year’s roads vote are not sufficiently advanced to enable further authorisations to be made, I regret that for the present this item will have to stand over. As soon as I am in a position to do so, I shall be pleased to consider the Council’s request that the amount applied for be made available for expenditure. Okarito Track—(£l for £1). As this amount was provided last year under the vote for Roads on Goldfields I now have pleasure in advising that formal authority is being issued, and the Council should shortly receive notification to this effect. Graham’s Road—£lso (£1 for £1). It appears that this road has not yet been legalised, and therefore the free grant of £IOO authorised last year, cannot be paid. It will, therefore, be impossible to consider the question of authorising the subsidy of £l5O (£1 for £1) until such time as legislation has been completed. Kumar a Junction to Chesterfield — £6OO (£2 for £1). Kumara Junction to Kapitea—£2so (free), The special circumstances in connection with these two works are now receiving consideration. Three Mile Bridge—£2oo (£2 for £1). As this subsidy was appropriated last year under the Roads and Goldfields Vote, I have pleasu.o in advising that I have approved issue of authority, and formal notification to this effect should shortly reach the Council from my Department.
