RIVAL EXPLORERS. DELVING INTO ASIA’S- SECRETS. ■CALCUTTA, May 28. The advance party of the great Citroen motor expedition through the East is now in India. The main party is in Afghanistan. The expedition is travelling in two sections in light cars and (jaterpillar motor lorries, including workshop, cinema and hospital cars. Part of the route follows that taken by Alexander the Great on his march along the Indus, and part the old “silk route,” which Sir Aurol Stein hoped to follow on his expedition. fie was, however, refused permission by the Chinese authorities to enter Sinkiang. Sir Aurol has given up hope of returning to India from Kashgar, and it is now likely that he will take his British Museum Harvard University expedition into Southern Persia.
PARADE OF “MIGHT.” GERMAN NAVAL POWER. LONDON, May 28. The- most elaborate German naval display since the war marked the review of the fleet by President von Hindenburg following the launching of . the new “pocket battleship,” Deutschland, says the Kiel correspondent of “The Times.” 'Hie cruiser Konigsberg. flying the President’s standard, took the salute as the seaplanes soared and the fleet steamed past in line ahead, with four battleships of the: pre-Drencinought class in the van. The. pocket batt.eslrips will progressively replace these. Then came the two sister ships of the Konigsberg, built under the; replacement clauses of the Peace Treaty, followed by oP destroyers, submarine chasers, and smaller era t. The crews manned the ships, arousing the enthusiasm of the crowds of sightseers in steamers and launches. The Konigsberg, which the Deutschland eclipses in grace, let the parade to the port, passing a three-masted tunning ship with her yards manned.
