It i.s understood that the combined race meeting held at Grey mouth last week will result in a small, but no doubt, acceptable profit to the Westland and Grcymouth Clubs concerned. The meeting was managed very economically. and in addition the ball which was held on the eve of the second day’s racing, also gave a fair surplus, and will he included in the pool. As soon as the returns from the meeting are available; the. Committee of the Westland Club will moot. to consider fho future.
Tim, death is reported, this week from Dunedin of Mr George Richardson, who wnjjj born in India, and apart from some years spent in Fiji lived the whole of his life in Dunedin. He took no part in public life and was of a reserved disposition. He identified himself, however, with the local Theosopincal Society, of which he be ome one of the most prominent members, being a frequent speaker at its meetings. He was unmarried and bis nearest surviving relative is a niece (Airs Herbert Alaeandrew), who resides in Christchurch. He was 90 years old. hut throughout his life carried his years well and did not look his age.

There will be a considerable number of men affected by the stoppage of No. o Scheme at the end of the week. Unfortunately for several next week is the “week off,” due to the men having worked 11 11 ee weeks in succession. Tn such eases the scheme ends this week for them. So far as the 'County district iis poneerned. some -10 men are eligible for work next week under No. o Scheme, and they will lie employed for their allotted time. Quite a eousiderthle amount ol useful work lias been carried out in some localities by road widening and drainage improvements, and traffic- will have the benefit of the work in the future. Several road widening works were contemplated hut for the interruption of the scheme for the time being, hut no doubt the works will he put in hand later when money is provided to resume the operations.

As the result of serious ihjuHes sustained through being knocked down by the Blaekhail-Greymouth train at Kamnka station at about. 1’2.30 p.m. oil Wednesday bust, Joseph Kemp Burgess, agm! ofs years, u huslimnn, died at ttm Grey Hospital yesterday morning at 4.30 o’clock. Since his removal to the Hospital in a serious condition, suffering from a fractured ankle, severe injuries and shock, the deceased gradually became worse, and passed away as stated. The late Air Burgess, who was employed at ATeates’ Sawmill. Otira Line, was, it appears, visiting friends on AA ednosday at Txamaka, and when steeping over fbc railway line, without noticing the apnroach of the train, he was struck by the cowcatcher and thrown clear.
