GENERAL ELECTION

MAY COME QUICKLY. .United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, June 11. Lobbyists agree that a serious crisis threatens as between the Government and the Liberals which may lead to a surprise general election. The Liberal Party, it says, has determined, by 16 votes to six, to press an amendment to the proposed land tax, exempting therefrom land on which income tax is paid. Mr Philip Snowden (Chancellor of tho Exchequer) declares that this amendment is entirely unacceptable, as it would upset the whole equilibrium of the budget, There has been much negotiation between the Party Leaders behind the scenes, but no compromise has been discovered. The Government has intimated to Mr Lloyd George that the Liberal amendment will be treated as a question of confidence, and that if it is carried, thev will seek a dissolution.

(File Conservatives are certain to support the amendment unitedly. If the Liberals vote solidly, the Government is hound to he beaten.

...Mr Lloyd George denies that the Liberals are split on the question. He points out that the decisibn to submit the amendment was taken at a full Party meeting.
