P. & T. REVENUE

FOR LAST QUARTER. INCREASE RECORDED. (By Telegraph — l’er Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 11. The revenue figures for the Post and Telegraph Department for the quarter ended 31st. March, have been gazetted. 'I lie Department explains that the revenue from all sources exceeds that for the March quarter of last vear by £36,037.

The earthquake at Napier, which occurred in February, had a very pronounced effect on the Department’s revenue, and this applied principally to telephones and tolls, where the loss in receipts was approximately £20,C00. This large sum was due mainly to the fact that telephone rentals in respect to the Napier and Hastings telephone subscribers were due on the first of March.

The increase in the postage revenue, due to the higher rates, reached ap* proximatly £34,000 for the month of March.

There was a. decrease in telegraph business,- amounting to £BOOO, and in toll business amounting to £14,000. The Savings Bank business for the quarter showed an excess of withdrawals over deposits of £374,000, as against an excess of £978,000 in withdrawals for the March quarter last year, so that the position for this term this year is more favourable than last year to an extent of £004,000, The effect of the depression is not* iceable in practically all branches ofthe Department’s activities.

The total Post and Telegraph revenue for the quarter (shillings and pence omitted! is £902,299, compared wit It £866,292 for the corresponding period la.st year.
