MOTOR CARNIVAL SMASH

During a motor cycling carnival at Rydaliner a oompotitors machine dasher over a. bank into the crowd. Twenty persons were injured, live whei-of had broken legs and two others fractured thighs, The remainder had minor injuries.
VICTOR IAN ASSEAIBLY ELECTIONS. MELBOURNE, June 8. Contests for nine seats in the Victorian Legislative Council were held Saturday, the occasion being the triennial election. It is row known that they resulted in the return of five retiring members and four new ones. Tile outstanding feature of the election was a diminished Labour vote and an overwhelming defeat of Mr W. J. Beckett, Labour Minister of .Health, ‘by Air Herbert Olnoy. who was the United Australian Party candidate. The campaign was eo'-cl noted almost on issues of .national finance. OBITUARY. SYDNEY, June 8. Colonel S. J. Shillington. a. prominent soldier, who served with distinction at Gallipoli, in Palestine and in France. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1919. ' Then ho became Resident Magistrate and Acting-Judge at Rabnul in 1926, from which place lie returned last year owing to ill health.
