WITH SALARY CUTS. (Australian Press Association.) i SYDNEY, June 7. “The Sun” says: A feature of Mr Lang’s economy proposal which ■startled the Premiers’ Conference during its secret session, when the plans for the reducing of government expenditure by twenty per cent, were disclosed by Treasurers, was the way in which the N.S.W. Government is to effect salary reduction. The New South Wales Government, said Mr Lang proposed to conform with the Conicieneo’s resolutions relating to expenditure Reduction by reducing salaries and payments of every person in the employ of the Government to a maximum of five hundred pounds per year. That would include the State Governor, the Judges, the Railway Commissioners, the Auditor-General, the Cabinet Ministers, the members of Parliament and those people who are holding statutory appointments. Mr Lang indicated that one million pounds would have to he saved on salaries. It was proposed, he said, to take approximately the whole ol this from the higher-paid officers, but should any further amount be required the adjustments might he made lower down in the scale. The Sydney morning papers agree that the prospects of agreement at the Melbourne Premiers’ Conference arc brighter. The atmosphere has improved, and an acceptable plan is in sight.
