WELLINGTON, June 5
The Wellington City Council discussed the report of a special finance committee set up to reduce the estimates, Tile committee recommended that £IO,OOO, required to provide for the relief of unemployment until the end of August, should be taken from the profits of the Electricity Department, and that all salaries and wages he reduced bv 10 per cent, after July 1..
The Mayor (Mr V. C. Hisl°p) said that he had expected the available income to be £241.060, including a carry forward of £I3OO, but on examination it was found that they were really £23,000 behind. Cr. 1L Semple. M.P., complained that what was actually a bad debt had been shown as a cash payment, and he strongly criticised the previous Mayor.
Several councillors protested against tile Electricity Department being raided for unemployment, but toe proposal was adopted. , The 10 per cent, reduction was also carried, but it will not be apphed to married men so as 1o bring them below £4 in the meantime.
