A petition, in connection with « poll to determine the half holiday in W'jiipukurau Horough, held on May Gth, .'as heard before Air Mowjem, S.M.. this afternoon. There were fourteen »igiia Lories to the petition, representing a number of electors, who were dissatisfied with the declared result of tile poll, when Saturday closing was carried by a majority of sixteen as igainst the. existing day, Wednesday. Counsel for the petitioners alleged that the wording on the voting paper was misleading, and in had form, and ■as not in compliance with the provisions of the Local Elections and polls Act. and also that the Upturning Other failed to hold the official count in Hie manner provided in the Act, and that notice of thp electors’ roll being men for inspection was not given. rt '"'as also alleged that a number of the names on tli? 1929 roll were left off the 1931 roll, and that sonic electors who were eligible to vote were not given the opportunity to use the declaration vote. A number of witnesses • gave evidence as to misleading directions on the - voting paper. Mr C. G. Harker is ’ppea’ring for the petitioners, and Air PL B. Lusk, of Napier, is appearing for a group of elector® who ;U'e •opnosing the petition. There is gnat interest in the proceedings. Thp court, was still sitting to-night, and further evidence will lie taken.
