Westland Acclimatisation and Tourist Society

THURSDAY, JUNE 4. The monthly meeting of the Council of the above society was held at the County Chambers at 7.39 o’clock. Present:—Dr. Teichelmann (President), Messrs J. J. Mclntosh, 11. Welts, R Paterson, J. King, A. C .Armstrong \V. Braddon, Kelly, Garnet Perry and D. J. Evans. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved. Erom Department of Internal Affairs forwarding form for the issue ot permits to trap, in connection with the opossum season.—Received. From same acknowledging report in respect to bird-life in Westland. Received.

From same regretting it was net possible to agree to the, payment of a tail bonus for deer culling to the Society s Ranger in South Westland, and' asking for the assurance that none of the tails of deer destroyed by the culler would be presented for payment.- -Received ; the secretary stated no reason was assigned for withdraw ng the Government bonus on deer tails brought in by the South Westland culler.

Erom N.Z. Accl nuitisateioo Societies Association forwarding copy of correspondence relative to opossum revenue. —Reeived with thanks. It was pointed out .the, local. Society had been responsible for the introduction of opossums in some localit es, and it would appear the whole of the revenue would lie takeventually for departmental purposes. From Grey District Acclimatisation Society arranging to visit the hatchery at l.cke Kanieri in respect to season’s work.—Received. It was reported that on ths occasion of the visit of the President (ilr Beck) expressed entire satisfaction with the condition of the hatchery, and the late work carried out. It was indicated that the Grey Society would require 250,000 brown trout ova, and 250,000 Rainbow trout ova, and Westland was asked to hatch this supply on the usual conditions. It was decided' to order 1111 additional 150.000 brown ova from Christchurch. Air Armstrong reported 011 the satisfactory condition of the buildings and plant at the hatchery, and stated with the complete •on. of the present, work in hand very little additional outlay would he required for a considern.be time to come.

From Sullivan Bros., Weheka suggesting Lake Mathcson would be an ideal spot to liberate Canadian geese, and enquiries it' a few could be procured for the locality.—Received ; reply to bo sent that geese could probably be procured from the Christchurch Society, rt was Stated Mr Norman Friend was giving every attention to the birds liberated at Okarito Lagoon, where they should do well. From James Dobson. Pokeno, explaining delay in filling order for pheasant chickens, and suggesting full grown birds be taken at £1 each.—Received. It was resolved to await the supply of pheasant chicks wh cli had been ordered. Wataroa Flat was mentioned as a very suitable territory for the liberation of birds. Notifications of the issue of sliootfng and opossum trapping licenses were received. Gratification was expressed at the increase of shooting licenses in South Westland. GENERAL. .
