THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.
EMPIRE TRADING, Mr Snowden, arrant, even arro«gant freetrader, demands that Britain buys in the cheapest market. The cheapest market i. s that which can also provide employment, for otherwise the cost of the dole has to be added to the cost of the supplies. Pundit as lie is, this simple fact cannot penetrate: Ins mind. Actually his , wheat and l utter coit’the Briton five and six times as much as the invoiced price, because to that price must in truth be added the tens of millions spent annually to keep the unemployed f«J and clothed. The Dominions are the natural customers of Great Britain. They are already the largest customers. They are the buyer s most worth cultivating, because they owe so much to Britain; they have the greatest possibilities of expansion of population and of wealth. To these facts Mr Snowden prefers hi s deficit, his -dole, and liis perpetual' depression. —Sydney Paper.
