BOROUGH COUNCIL PROTEST. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) STRATFORD, May 20. Th© Borough Council passed the fob lowing resolution:—This council noting the statement of the Minister that while £715,984 was spent on relief by the Unemployment Board to the end of April, the levy produced only £308,069, and while sympathetic to the request of Government to local bodies to do as much as possible to help those in distress, they considei the burden of any increased outlay should not be placed on the shoulders of local ratepayers, but be borne nationally, either by nn increaso i« the levy or from the consolidated fund.

“Every fourth week, the s c heme as at present constituted, does not operate. I cannot see local ratepayers should be called on to slippy relief to unemployed, said the Mttyoi. Cr. Fletcher criticised the way the scheme had operated. Fie thought that larger re.ll-f works should be undertaken so that the economic waste entailed by numerous small schemes might be eliminated.
