PREMIERS’ CONFERENCE

LOAN COUNCIL REPORT. (Australian Press Association.) (Received this day at, 9.25. a.m) MELBOURNE, May 26. The Premiers Conference discussed the report of The Loan Councils subcommittee and proposals of the committee of experts suggesting twenty per cent, cut in public service salaries, pensions and maternity allowances and fifteen per cent reduction in interest from fixed money. They favoured heavier taxation on incomes over seven hundred pounds, high levy on singlo persons and increased sales tax and primage duties. The Loan Council’s committee reported that it had not had enough time to consider tho expert’s recommendations sufficiently. It had agreed, however, on the. necessity for ,a. twenty per cent, reduction, of all.. Government expenditure ; compared with 1929-80. It thought ~.the conversion. of Australia’s internal indebtedness at-a reduced rate of interest would them be possible.
