FEWER MEN TEACHERS

TRAINING COLLEGE ROLL

WELLINGTON, May 20

A ‘market decline has been noted in the number of men entering the teaching profession in Wellington and "bile men constituted over 0110-third of the total on the roll of the Training College in 1925, they numbered considerably less than one quarter in 1929 and 19130. Of 2413 students on the roll last year only 51 were men, whereas six years ago there were 120 men on a total roll of 344. The annual report of the principal of the Training College states:—“The figures submitted show a similar small proportion of men to women to that of last year, an unfortunate situation which ha s been developing in the college for some time. The disadvantages of such an undue preponderance of women lias been pointed out in the last two annual deports, hut it seems impossible to make suggestions whereby tile situation can be improved. In 1929 and 1930 the proportion of men was 21 per cent., the lowest figure since 1910, when male students accounted for only 18.3 per cent, of the roll.
