WELLINGTON, May 10
me reorganisation of New Zealand’s military forces on a volunsary basis was announced to-day by Mr Cob be, who says' that the change over will bring the system into line with that in Britain and other parts of the Empire.
Regimental di|triett; will inirnish their quota of recruits in various units as heretofore. Enlistments will he accepted from men between tne ages of 18 years to 25, tor a period' of three years, with a provision for the extension of service up to the age of 30.
The following are essential features. The now scheme \> ill provide for rapid mobilisation of an adequate force for home defence, or service overseas ; the retention of the present regiments, with their identity and traditions, the maintenance of a small but higher trained permanent lorce for instruction of the Territorial force and Cadets, and for peace administration. Training throughout the year will be limited to six evening parades and two half-day parades, and six days’ continuous training camp. The pay am]/ allowances will be the same as at present. Mr Cobbe added that, for the purpose of economy, the offices of Adju-tant-General, and Quartermaster-Gen-eral will he comhined, and in future the commanding officers of districts will be colonels.
Colonel Symon has been appointed in command of the Central Command, Lieutenant-Cojonel J. E. Duigan lias been appointed Colonel, to command the Northern command, Major S. P. P. N’k-'holls has been promoted Lieutenant-Colonel to command the Southern command, Lientemfnt-Col-onel I. T. Standish has been appointed to Adjutant and Quartermaster-Gen-eral at General Headquarters. ■ Mr Cobbe nays that the Cadre system of Territorials in operation since the suspension of compulsory /training was only a temporary measure, as it was recognised that units of such small strength could not train efficiently and take an interest in their work. These units are now given a relatively ]arge peace establishment, permitting of proper organisation and training.
