MISSING STEAMER. FORTY DEATHS FEARED. [United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) TOKYO, May 12. The steamer “Dairen Maru,” returning t-o Kamchatka- front Hakodate, wirelessed that she is in distress off the shore of Kurile Islands. Bad weather is reported and it is feared she has been lost with a crew of forty. Steamer s are proceeding to the rescue, but have been -unable to obtain any reply. DESTROYED INSTITUTIONS. 500 GIRLS HOMELESS. LONDON, May 12. A Madrid message states that the institutions destroyed include Christian Brothers’ schools, two Asylums where the nun s received and prepared destitute girls for domestic service. The destruction has resulted in live hundred girls being homeless. MORE CONVENTS ENDANGERED. LONDON, May 12. A Madrid message states the Chief of Police reports that out of one hundred and seventy convents in Madrid, seven have been burned. Seven convents were rescued in a timely manner from the incendiaries. A PAPAL PROTEST. ROME, May 11. It is reliably stated that the Vatican, through the Papal Nuncio at Madrid, is . strongly protesting to-day against the destruction of. Church pr.o-. perty, and will demand a declaration of condemnation of those responsible. It is believed that ,a continuance of the relations of flic Vatican with the Republic will depend upon the answer. BRITISH TRADE. (Received this day at S a.m.) LONDON. May 12. May 12. •*'' 'Prince" Von '"Billow’s memoirs whirl were to have-been published in England yesterday, were suspended owing to a threat by Lord Lonsdale that lie would hold the publishers responsible for libel. The memoirs according to the “Daily Herald” blamed Lord Lonsdale for causing- -.mischief between King Edward VII and the ex-Kaiser. - ; Lord Lonsdale commenting on the book remarked-AVhat is . writ-ten about me is pure imagination.
