WESTLAND COMPETITIONS
CROWDED ATTENDANCE 4 YESTERDAY. There was no doubt about {lie enthusiasm of the people of Hokitika, who crowded All Saints’ Hall yesterday afternoon and evening for tue fourth day of the Competitions. Very entertaining work was done. There was plenty of variety and all was very bright. The judges were happy in their remarks and informative in their criticisms. Miss Waugh, whose task as judge was completed last evening, spoke of the great improvement made. Mr Lilly was pleasantly complimentary to the vocalists and musicians, and Mr .Brown was always an informative critic, who dropped many hints to the performers on their work. The audience was in tune with the programme, which was indeed excellent. Applause was frequent, and free. The little touches of humour were greatly enjoyed, and it was quite a happy and contented •‘house.” Rev. Knowles Smith wnja a careful supervisor, and Messrs Osmers and Thiele divided the secretarial duties.

TO-NIGHT'S PROGRAMME The final session of the Competitions commences to-night at 7.30 o’clock in All Saints’ Hall. There will be a number of recalls from the adjudications tin the forenoon and afternoon. Special interest will centre in the vocal classes to-night which will include the finals for the sacred solo and also the ladies’ solo for Mr Moss’ frophy. Patrons will find it a bright, entertaining evening. Tomorrow night the first demonstration concert takes place in the Princess Theatre, commencing at. 7.40 o’clock. The final concert begins at the same hour also in the Theatre on Thursday night. The booking is large* already. No doubt the popularity of the Competitions will he maintained to the end. for every session gives great pleasure and enjoyment to patrons.
FIFTH DAY. The interest in the Competitions on the part of the public was well manifesed hv the attendance when the Competitions resumed this afternoon All Saints’ Hall was well filled by an attentive audience which was treated to an excellent programme. TODAY’S AWARDS.
Dentation 13, and under 17, (own selection), not humorous. Nine competed. recalls:—Jean Kyle. Joy Ward, and F. Collogan. Air Brown, the judge, remarked this was a very excellent class, and some of the best work of the Competitions had been produced. He was sorry he could not recall more, as all were worthy of being heard again. He complimented the class for its high standard. ‘•Sacred Solo” .(own selection). Twelve competed in this class, which was most entertaining. The recalls
