TWO YOUTHS SENTENCED* (liy telegraph—Per Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 8. Hazel) Mervyn Gaffney, aged 18 ami Alfred Yernol Walker aged 3G!. were this morning sentenced, tiie former 10 21 years and tiie latter to 2 years Borstal detention by Justice Kennedy, <0 various charges of breaking and enter ing. Counsel suggested that tiie cause of Gaffney’s crimes was over addiction to pernicious, sensational literature. In regard to Gaifnev throwing a knife at a pursuing detective, counsel urged that the carrying of knives was only youthful bravado, and there had been no intention to liit the detective.
The Judge commented that lie had no doubt the formidable weapon was thrown to disable the detective.
RAILWAY REPORT. WELLINGTON, May 8. A SUICIDE. CHRISTCHURCH. May 8. William Ralph Gardner 55, a flourmiller of Hackthorne road was found dead jyehteirday;. He left a note “Good-bye. I am going mad.” The Coroner returned a verdict of suicide by inhaling coal gas, while in a state of depression and ill-health. CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL. CHRISTCHURCH. May 8. From the present indications it is believed that Labour will secure nine seats in the Christchurch City Council, the Citizens’ Association six, and Independent one, but a lot will depend on how the surpluses from Rev. Archer’s first preferences will be distributed. The count under proportional representation is not likely to finished before next Wednesday.
