CAUGHT IN THE ACT
-MAN STEALING BOOKS. AUCKLAND, May 1. The theft of three books, valued at 4s, belonging to Hugh Lynn, was admitted by Alexander Rea, aged 31, a waterside worker, when he appeared at tile Police Court to-day. Detective Sergeant Kelly said Constable Prestage, at 3 o’clock on Friday afternoon, saw Rea take the books from the front of a shop in Karangaliape Road. He then walked into a hotel. The constable followed and questioned him and accused said lie got tim hooks in Ronsouby Road. R (, a had two previous convictions for theft. Air Allan Smytlie, who appeared for accused, said Rea was under the influence of drink when he committed the foolish theft. The books were about radio, and of no use to him . Air F. Iv. Hunt: Oh, yes, lie could have sold tlmm for a shilling and bought .more beer. Counsel added that Rea was prepared to take out a prohibition order. Air Hunt prohibited accused ni 'd fined him £2, or 14 days’ imprisonment..
