The Church of England Vicarage, Kaiapoi, an eight-roomed two storied building, situated in Cass Street was almost destroyed by fire last night. The lire started in the wash-house, detached a few feet from the main building, and when discovered had -i firm hold. Fanned by a fresh southerly breeze tlh' flames caught the eaves o'f ilie vicarage, a very old building, and before flic brigade bad wafer applied the back portion was burning fierceiv. Ibe vicar, the Rev. C. L. Sparrow, was conducting the evening service of tin* church close by, and Mrs Sparrow was attending the service. - -.Their two young sons were asleep in -tlx* hou.-.e. but were promptly removed by the first helpers to arrive. Most of the furniture rind Mr Sparrow's 'library were saved.
