DAIRY INDUSTRY
COMING CONFERENC'E
IMPORTANT ISSUES TO RE RAISED.
FLAXY ERA. April 20.
At the National 17.ir. :;u,oii conference, to be held in N--u Plymouth in June, an effort w'l! be made to launch a movement seeking a farreaching amendment of the Dairy Board Act, with a view to placing responsibility for tlie administration of tbe domestic affairs of industry in tlie bands of tlie board, whose present authority is restricted to exports.
The Mnngntoki Dairy Company has circularised all dairy companies in the Dominion asking for support tor the following remit to tbe conference; —
(a) That this conference expresses its dissatisfaction with the present methods of administration of the dairy industry, and considers, in tlie post, the administration has been ineffective, failing to provide a truly authoritative head, representative °f the industry, charged with the responsibility of directing and governing the industry in its internal as well ns its export affairs.
fh) That, in the opinion of this conference, there is urgent need for n change in the methods of administration and the conduct of tbe internal policy of the industry.
(o) That uncertainties of policy, particularly in regard to the promotion of quality, have revealed the weaknesses in tbe present administration, and have resulted in a loss of goodwill with buyers and consumers of New Zealand dairy produce.
(cl) That the better co-ordination of the various service units within the industry is necessary to its welfare.
(e) That effective administration of the industry involves the exercise of authority and a degree of discipline which can only be applied by a board of organisation, elected by the producers and set up as tlio head of the industry, with powers to guide and control in all matters relating to internal as well as export policy.
(f) That to give effect to the foregoing proposals, the Dairy Board, iu its present form or reconstituted, should be made tlie head of the industry with extended powers, and charged with responsibility for administration as indicated.
(g) That in order to further the proposals set forth above, a committee be appointed from tlie conference to bring down in detail an administrative plan for the industry, the report of tlie committee to bo dealt with before the. conclusion of the conference, The National Dairy Association has invited all non-member companies to send represent.iti w® to *h • oonierence to discuss and vote •ip |, n the remit.
