CALLOUS MOTORIST

ASSISTANCE WITHHELD. VICTIM SEVERELY INJURED. AUCKLAND, April 17. Charges of negligent driving, failing to report an accident, anil tailing to render assistance to an injured person tifter an accident, were preferred against a young motorist, Hector Robert Rose, in the Police Court. He pleaded uof guilty. Ihomas Collins, coal and firewood merchant, said that at about 6 p.m. 011 November 7 last, while carrying a. hag of firewood across AYoodward H°ad, -Mount Albert, h e wa s knocked down by a motor-car and received severe injuries to the spine. The motor-car did not stop. Witness was in hospital for four months and expected to be laid up for another four months.

\\ ituess said that some days after the accident. Rose, wh 0 had been identified as the driver of the car, called uiioii witness to see if the mat--ter could he kept out of Court. He suggested he should pay money to witness, but the offer wa s refused. AVitness said Rose admitted t 0 witness that lie had been drinking prior to the accident.

Daniel Collins, father of the injured man, said he followed the car into a side street after the accident. When asked if he knew In* had knocked a man down. Rose remarked to witness; “It served him right; he was dancing about iu the middle of the road with a hag of wood on Tiis back,” Witness said Rose was drunk and refused to go back, so witness took the number of the car.

A young hoy, Leonard YMlop, s aid he saw Mr Collins lying on the road after being knocked down. The driver of the car made no attempt to stop. Constable AP Cowan said he questioned Rose about the accident and also about minor damage that had been caused to his motor-car. Rose said his ear had been damaged at Albany, but investigations proved that b P liad never been there. He also failed to produce his driver’s license. At this stage Rose altered liis plea to guilty. Leniency, was asked for, as he was a builder out of work.

“He is very lucky to be out- of gaol.” remarked tbe Alagistrate, AD’ F. K. Hunt. is a very callous thing n,ot to stop and give assistanceto an injured person.”

Rose was fined amounts totalling £l6 and ordered to pay £4 17s costs. His driver’s license was cancelled for six months.
