MORE RETRENCHMENT

AT GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 20. The statement was being made 1.. the city this morning that all of the single men in the Government Printing Office had been retrenched,- •ainpthat a similar policy was being -pursued by the Government in the civil service generally.

In the machine room, said Air Smith, the work had fallen off considerably, and the'services of the casual (Staff had boon dispensed with. Mr Smith stated that these dismissals were not being made in pursuance of a general order,’ but they had been earned out at the discretion of the Siipcri ii ten dent.

Asked if general retrenchment was behind carried out affecting the single men in the miblir- service, the Prime Minister said that he knew nothing of such a proposal.
