LAGER BREWERY

PROTESTING CHANTING OF LICENSE. WANGANUI, April In. Addressing the annual meeting of the WnhgiHlui-Titriinalii area of the New Zealand Alliance to-day, Mr 9 Maltofi Mu I'l-ay, general sr-ei'etlifiV ui' the alliance, protested strong'}* against tile proposal to grant a license to Larger Breweries (New Zealand), Ltd., cm the ground that the assurance given by the Comptroller of Customs in this connection was beyond the province of the Comptroller, since 110 application (for a license could legally lie made until the premises and plant were actually in existence. Air .Murray stated that a license had originally been refused. but at a subsequent judgment of the Appeal Court had declared that if certain conditions were fulfilled the Minister of Customs 111 u-t grant his approval, hut since the Minister, by his refusal, had shown that he was not desirious of granting a license, the envious course was for the Government to rectify the ridiculous and dangerous position created by the judgment and pass legislation immediately that would confer on the Minister tlie power ho had hitherto possessed of refusing to grant a license. A resolution urging the immediate introduction of amending legislation in this sense was unnnmously adopted for transmission to the Prime Minister.
