M.V. “ALEXANDER”
DIESEL ENGINES INSTALLED. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) GRIEYMOUTH, April 18. The Anchor Shipping Company’s motor vessel Alexander, which was recently fitted with Diesel engines, arrived yesterday on her first trip since the change-over from steam. She later sailed for Dargaville with coal. The Alexander, which is of a net tonnage of 190 tops, is now fitted with two Gardner heavy oil engines with vertical two-cycle-compress ion ignit ion airless fuel injection. Each engine is of 201) h.p., giving a speed when loaded of nine knots, and when light of 10 knots. She carries enough fuel for ■eleven days, namely 15 tons. She is also fitted with three friction oildriven winches for handling cargo. For Diesel engines were recently fit--1 h.v the Patent Slip Company at W ellington, and the winches were made by Seagar Bros., Auckland. Captain P. S. Martin is in command. The only outward evidence of the change apart from the new winches, which work very well, is the new funnel, which is very broad and squat.
