It has been definitely established, from a reliable source to-day, that in spite of fchc Diet that the f'°vernment hoped that the i-ecent wage (•eductions would obviate the necessity for. there are to be dismissals on a large scale. These are to be made in addition (<' those dismissals already carried out. Apart from this, those who have completed 35 years' service will he retired compulsorily, in accordance with a recent Cabinet, decision. These retirements will nutnbr aboid GOO. RAILWAY RETIREMENTS. WELLINGTON, April 14. It is understood that amongst the railway retirements are the 1 allowing: Mr W. Donnelly the AssiMant General-Manager, who has comnlcted his 10 voars’ service. Mr F. CL Widdop, Chief Eimm-m----who would complete 10 years’ service in August next. Included amongst the officers in the .Wellington and suburbs district who are retiring with the completion ,<>* 35 years’ service are tin* following:— Mr ,T. Brown, District Traffic Manager. Wellington. Mr F. K. Portoous, Assistant Chh'ft: Accountant. A Air R. T. Collins Assistant <"r trollor of Stores. Air A. S. Henderson. Assistant Engineer. Air R. H. .Morgan, M ’ at Tliorndon. Air R. D. Scott, Assistant Stationmaster at Lamhton. NOT ALL OBLIGATORY. WELLINGTON, April 14. Officers of the Railway Department whose names were freely mentioned ii Wellington yesterday in connection with the immediate retirement, of public servants with over 35 years' service. did not confirm the belief that..; the retirements would be obligatory and without exception. It is certain, however, that hundreds of Government employees in the Dominion are likely to be embraced by the move. One prominent official of the Railway Department whose retirement lias been mentioned as certain, stated this evening that finality rested with the Public Service Superannuation Board. A number of officers mv considering voluntary retirement as an economy measure. Their decisions would >••' referred to th<> Superannuation Board. Air F. K. Porteous, Assistant Chief Accountant of Railways, Wellington, said this evening that the announcement of retirement was correct so far as lie was concerned. AD' M. Denneliv, Assistant-General Alanager, who lffis completed 40 years’ service, stated that the announcement that lip and F. C. Widdop. Chi 'f Engineer, were retiring, was unfounded. Air C. Ryan also said the same.
