Tragic details of the sufferings of Father Cornelius Tiertcy, Director of St. Columhan’s Mission at Keinchang, who died in captivity on 5 March, have reached Ireland. Father Tiertoy was captured by brigands while saying Mass. His hands were tied and lfo was orutnDy beaten, after which they threw a soldier’s cloak over his shoulders and mocked him. He was kept alive for five days, with one hand tied to his body, his only food being rice. When the bandits left Koitihang, they dragged him alongside, until lie fell injuring his ankle, whereupon lie was tied to a ladder ,carrie dt 0 Nanfeng, and handed over to Communists who demanded a ransom of forty thousand dollars.
Father Tiertey sent a letter to his colleagues asking for his prayers, to enable him to hear his suflereing. He added that he was quite resiged to die. iho British Legation repeatedly made fruitless efforts to secure his release.
