PRISONERS SENTENCED (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 26. Prisoners sentenced by Mr .justice MacG •eger included : —Aubrey Lester Andrew, five charges of breaking, entering, theft and forgery, two years Wilfred Edward William Gutton, breaking, entering and theft, twelve mont lis. Rupert Adam Stigant, indecent assault on a male, five years. William Robert Petersen, indecent assault, nil a girl ol two years and •loiln Williams, forgery and uttering, at Masterton. six months. Not man Graham .McKenzie, breaking entering and tliel't, two years probation. Beatrice Annie Berne, theft, twelve months probation. Mervyu Yaldomar Berggeren. breaking, entering and theft, eight charges. twelve months each concurrent. A special plea was made and leniency was extended to Berggeren on account: of his conduct at Napier when the ear;liquake occurred. He was lit, (lie police station and was released on parole for his safety and also in the hope that he might be of some assistance. Hh had been instrumental in rescuing a patient from Dr Moore’s hospital, after which lie rescued a woman from a collapsed wooden building and then rescued small children from (lie hospital. He acted as a cook for a month at oiiy. of the camps.
His Honour remarked on the. fact that, probation was not; recommended. William Sydney Evans, Post Office Official, theft of £495 4s Kid, two years, It was urged that the thefts were on account of family difficulties and mostly to repay what already had been taken the amount.so mounting up like a snowball.
His Honour remarked that the prisoner was a trusted servant. It is true that he is of good repute, but that is probably why he was placed iii the position lie occupied.
