How a fortune of over one million sterling had lain neglected for thirtyfive years while the heir made up hi« mind to consult a lawyer was disclosed in the case of Monsieur Chailes, a ietired shipowner, who is a great nephew of General Hoche, the French revolutionary leader. He learnt that hi,s aunt, Madame Essantos, died in 1895 in Brazil. He knew that she was the widow of a wealthy planter, and that lie was her sole heir, but, being possessed of sufficient to live on modestly, he did not prosecute his claim. He is now notified that £1,250,600 13 awaiting his disposal, so he has instructed a Brazilian lawyer to take the necessary steps. Meanwhile M. Charles goes on with his hobby, which is that of the scientific study of oysters and their artificial fertilisation.
