NAVAL DECISION
TYPE OF GRUTSERS. (United Press Association—By Eiectru Telegraph—Copyright. ] LONDON, March 18. The Daily Telegraph understands ■that irrespective of treaty obligations, no more Washington type of cruisers like the Australia and Canberra will be constructed for the British Navy. They constitute a hybrid type born of political expediency, and have been tried and found wanting. They are condemned by highest naval opinion as they reproduce an exaggerated scale of all defects of our •early battle cruisers, three of which blew up at Jutland under fire from more lightly armed ships. The “Telegraph” recalls Berry's , criticism cabled on 21st of January, and adds that there is.no question of scrapping the present fen' thousand • tenners, but the type is dead. This is an encouraging sign that the Admiralty at last lias broken from the artificial standards- dstablished^' byWa sh i ngton Treaty -fan d is no w seek in g to build ships adapted to the needs ol tile Empire.
