HEAVY SHOCK AT NAPIER. DAMAGED WALLS FALL. (By Telegraph — Per Press Association) NAPIER, Marcli 9. A heavy earthquake, probabi.y the third most severe since February 3rd, was felt at 11 .of) last night. Some damaged walls were, toppled over, but no damage is reported. Tlu> weather is fine, but after a dull Sunday with morning showers. PROLONGED EARTHQUAKE. STRATFORD, March 9. A prolonged earthquake was felt here at 11.52 last night, the direction N.E. to S.W., with a long easy swing. A. W. Burrell who has a recording apparatus stated the shake lasted five minutes, finishing with an elliptical motion. There was no damage.
FELT AT GISBORNE. GISBORNE, March 9. A sharp earthquake was experienced at 11.50 p.m.. No damage is reported. A 'QUAKE. AVAIROA, March 9. Two severe earthquake shocks were experienced here yesterday, one at 11.45 p.m. being second heaviest sincethe big shake, and buildings swayed alarmingly. an EARTHQUAKE. SYDNEY, March 9. The seismograph at River view observatory recorded a New Zealand 'quake at 9.55 last night. The tremor was only of a minor character. MAN’S ARM TORN OFF. ASHBURTON. March 7. Percy Willis, aged 26, a single man, is in a serious condition in the hospital. He had his left arm torn off when his hand was caught in a fat-cutting machine at Fairfield Freezing Works this morning. HUMAN REMAINS FOUND. HASTINGS, March 6. Human remains found among the debris of Roach's building at Hastings this morning were identified as those of Patricia Ivy Alloway, a girl in her teens, daughter of a Hastings resident. Further remains (one or two victims) were also found, this morning, but have not yet been identified. A FIRE. GJ BORNE, March 9. A fire destroyed the residence of Airs Violet Walworth at Kaiti, the family having a narrow escape in their night clothes. Insurances, £IOOO on building: and furniture £425 in the State Office.
FRACTURED SKULL. AiSHBURTON; March 7. Roy McClymont is in the hospital in a serious condition with a fractured skull. He was picked up at- TJunaandel by a service car this morning in an unconscious condition. Apparently he fell off a motor cycle. His address is unknown. A BAD TRIO. AUCKLAND, March 9. This kind of thing must stop, said Justice Herdman, in sentencing three youths Robit Rikit, Herbert Williams and Maurice Edward Weston for assault with intent to roll and breaking, entering and theft. The Judge said the prisoners entered a taxi, drove round Auckland, then seized upon the taxi driver, trying to throttle and rob him. Next they broke into a house, one wearing a mask. Another struck a man lying abed. Williams and Weston who had already been in Borstal, were sentenced to detention afterwards for three years in a prison camp. Rildt was sentenced to two years reformative. THEFT CHARGE. TH AMES. March 9. Two absconders from Weraroa, Charles Heberley and James Burton, both 17$ years, who were arrested op Saturday. were charged this morning with breaking and entering the New Zealand Express Company’s premises at Palmerston North and stealing money and 1 an electric torch. They were remanded to the 17th.
