The West Coast is apparently the Mecca of all “bagniclii.” A station owner, whose house is close to the road in one of its most isolated parts, stated that not a day passed without one or two. and even up to half a dozen “swaggers’’ calling in at the homestead in quest of a meal. The strange part about it was that only one in about every ten was heading hack from the West. Coast. Men from all parts of New Zealand were to he encountered on the roads with their packs up. There had been more this year than ever before, and by far the greater majority were a very decent class ol
A surprising ’ number of people in the Ashburton County are using wool instead of kapoc to pack pillows, cushions. and mattresses, and it appears that the substitute is giving results quite as satisfactory as kapoc, states the “Ashburton Guardian,” The wool is thoroughly scoured, clipped into short pieces, and well teased before being used. After the mattresses have been in used for some time they are periodically placed in the sun lor an hour or two and the packing again becomes fluffy and soft. It was stated in Ashburton recently that a family had been using the wool-filled mattresses fur 20 years, and when it was opened recently the wool was in just: as good condition as when it was put in. It had not deteriorated, and there was no trace of dust in the mattress easing. As the first two or three hundred of the 470 feet of the oil tanker Brunswick appeared in sight in Lyttelton on Friday evening, spectators wondered what sort of a vessel it was. The long low hull, the only projection being the slightly-raised poop to meet the seas, resembled an over-grown Maori canoe as more and more it kept coming into sight. At last the bridge and funnel, perched at the extreme stern, came into view, showing that, after all, it did have some motive power of its own other than the Harbour Board’s tug in front. Some of the onlookers thought that in the distance it looked like one of the canal barges of England, and one was uncomplimentary as to suggest a Dnschund, blit all were agreed that the Brunswick has the strangest appearance of any craft ever seen at Lyttelton.

.Motor traffic to Dorothy Falls was general on Sunday, several ears traversing the new road. The road is an interesting one and extends for some five miles from the lake landing. It is well constructed and graded, but drivers require to exercise care along the route, which is narrow with several bends. The upper part of the road is narrow and soft in places, but will harden as the pug material dries. The “turn out” near the present terminus. is in need of widening, to permit cars to. pass without danger. The joiirnev to the Falls by boat, however, is still favoured, and a large number made the journey yesterday by launch. Both means of transport will continue popular no doubt.
