RESISTED ARREST

, MAN SENT TO GAOL. GREY-MOUTH, March 7. At the .Magistrate’s Court. Grevnioutli, yesterday, before .Messrs l l '. W. Shallcross and J. K.vle, ,I's. P.. Augustine Stewart McMahon was charged with being a rogue and vagabond within the meaning of the Police Offences Act, 1927, in that on being apprehended as an idle and disorderly person, he resisted arrest. Senior-Sergeant Roach conducted the prosecution. McMahon who pleaded guilty, staled that he was an out-patient at the Grey Hospital, which he visited regularly. Frederick "William Baillie said that the accused had been given an order from the Patriotic Society to attend the hospital as an out-patient. but had failed to take advantage of if. To the Senior-Sergeant; Accused had come to the office during the course of the last two or three weeks. \

Constable Robinson said tliat since February 10. accused had been supposed to report to tile hospital for treatment as an out-patient. but he had gone on only two occasions. Last evening a telephone message was received from tile Commercial Hotel stating that aroused was using abusive language and was going to break a window with his stick. Accused had previously asked a man for money, which had been refused, aroused then swearing and striking the man. who guarded the blow and hit back. When witness attempted to arrest McMahon, accused tried to hit him with the stiorc. Accused finally tripped witness up. both falling to the ground. In reply to a question from Mr K.vle, the Senior-Sergeant stated that accused could receive medical treatment in gaol. McMahon was cmvieted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment.
