I fie dainty figure dancing of a group of Mexican chorus girls became a horrible scramble for life, when a fire broke out at the end of the perfonnance in the historic Theatre Principal, which, for 178 years has been the foremost local theatro here.

Fourteen are dead and at least twelve are gravely injured. More fatalitios are feared among other players who were strapped behind the curtain and the scenery, but the rescuers were unable to recover their bodies from the mass of twisted steel and charred timbers.

Two prominent actresses, Lupe Rosales, and Carmen Velasco, were killed. The lattor h; 'd escaped, but ran back into the flames in an attempt to rescue a friend in the audience. The famous comedian, Roberto Soto, escaped uninjured.
