MAORIS BARRED
BY INSURANCE PARTIES. (By Telegraph —Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 26. The question of non-employment of Maoris as members of the permanent staff was raised at a meeting of the Harbour Board by Mr H. D. Bennett, who said he understood the reason was one of insirrance. Personally he could see no reason for such a differentiation against Maoris. The Chairman! Mr J. W. Maceman, said the Government Life Insurance Department and Insurance Companies would not accept a risk on members ol the Native race and the Board’s regulations required that members- of the permanent staff must be insured. He agreed that it was not fair to differentiate against Maoris, and if possible the Board should find a remedy for the position. After further discussion, the Chairman stated a report on the matter would be submitted at next meeting.
