AGAINST WAGE CUT
FOR PUBLIC SERVANTS ( By Telegraph —Per Press Association) TIMARU, February 24. A massed meeting of the public servants was held here to-night. i lie following resolution was carried :—“That this meeting or public servants protests aghinst the Prune Mmister's Budget-balancing proposals. While prepared to accept a reasonable share of (he country’s burden, we will oppose, by every constitution method any attempt to make the Public Service again carry an unreasonable share of the country’s financial burdens. The methods ol opposition include the fol-
lowing : (a) Refraining from making any purchases in those parts of the city areas where the ground rents are excessive. ib) Attempts to bring down the local prices of produce, including those of wheat and butter, to the world’s pa rit.v.
Ce) Co-operation with other Industrial Unions to secure equality of sacrifice.
(d) Organising to prevent any attempt, to prorogue Parliament. u*) Tho setting-up of a Parliament Executive of the Public Service workers to guard against. further raids. (ib lliat, in the event of a reduction of wages taking effect, all of the rented houses he brought within the scope of the Pent Peslrietion Act, and that the said Act lie permanently placed on Ibe Stalule Book. (g) Propaganda to place before the farmers the fact that, if they used the Government transport facilities, in stead of privately-owned motors, the national deficit would be reduced by a considerable* sum. DP APERS’ AND BOOT RETAILERS’ SALARY REDUCTION. WELLINGTON, Eebruary 24. 'the Wellington Drapers’ and Boot Retailers’ held a meeting of their organisation a lay or two ago. and decided to make reductions commencing on .March Ist, jn the wages and .salaries of all the members of there staffs who are not under the jurisdiction of the Arbitration Court. In the case of those who are under an Award and receive above Award rates, a reduction will be made ot 10 per cent. or down f,o the Award rates. In tho building trade cuts have been made in some departments by firms who have been paying above the award rates. Tin* labourers are now only bein paid the award rates, and carpenters who were receiving one penny and two pence over the award rate are new receiving only a half-penny an hone over the award.
