N.Z. WHEAT DUTIES
PRESENT CROPS PROTECTED. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 24Amplifying the statement which be made at Christchurch concerning the sliding scale of the wheat duties, Hon. G. W. Forbes, to-day said that he wanted it clearly understood that any readjustment that might be made would have absolutely no affect on the present crops. He said that the wheat growers might rest assured that any arrangements that had been made in respect to the present crops would stand as far as the Government was concerned. The Government’s decision would affect only future crops. Asked if legislation would he needed to give effect to the decision of the Government, the Prime Minister, stated that that aspect of the matter was being looked into by the Customs Department. It was his belief that the Government had power to deal with the matter without legislation. In reply to a suggestion that in the ' past the question of wheat duties had proved rather a delicate matter oil the floor of the House, Mr Forbes smilingly observed. “There will he quite a. lot of delicate matter on the floor ol j the House during the coming session : of Parliament.”
