Additional machine guns are being fitted to the leading edges of wings to increase the lighting power of aeroplanes employable to intercept enemy raids. The newest is S.S. 19, which was successfully tested by Glostcr Aircraft Coy, Marlcsham. It lias six machine guns callable of converging fire on a target of four mounted wings, one on each side of t-hc fuselage. The plane is equipped with 480 horse-power Bristol .Jupiter engine super-charged for altitudes. A. speed of 194 miles hourly was achieved with full military load. Thu machine climbed fifteen thousand feet in nine minutes. The greatest efficiency was attained at ten thousand feet, hut 176 miles an hour was reached at 26,100 feet, being equipped with oxygen breathing apparatus. It dives without vibration at three hundred and twenty miles hourly. A pilot can operate all six guns simultaneously.
