The opening pair collared the bowling and appeared likely to set a new African first wicket record, till Mitchell had the bad luck to kick a ball, well outside his leg stump, on to the wicket. He batted for 185 minutes. The wickets thereafter fell regularly and the innings ended just before time, stumps being drawn. Steady bowling was supported by excellent fielding. Farrimond the wicket-keeper did remarkably W'ell,, not a single extra being scored. The average fate of scoring was less than two runs per over. SOUTH AFRICA—First Innings.
