A fire broke out this afternoon in tiic Mackay Logan building in Lome i,Street, where considerable damage was caused. The outbreak was at one end of the building, where the following firms have premises: Ihe Auckland Millinery Factory, Pattlev and Coy., X.Z. Knitted Wear Ltd., Plummer Hat Coy. Ltd., Singer Sewing Machine Coy. When the Brigde arrived, the top floor was in flames, and a cloud ol white smoke was drifting over the immediate area. Firemen climbed on to the roof from the VVakeiield Street frontage, and gained an entry to t.'ie building. Owing to dense, smoke inside, there was some difficulty in getting at the seat of tip, fire. The premises of the Auckland Millinery Factory were absolutely gutted before the Brigade arrived, said the Deputy-Superintendant, Mr Aveuill. A large stock of millinery was destroyed, and about forty power sewing machines were badly damaged. The principal of tip' firm. Mr Zukermau, said that alaiut forty girls wore employed. The premises of the firms on the lower floor were slighlly damaged by water.
RLENHET.M FIRM. BEEN HELM, February 2.1. Fire this morning totally destroyed a five-roomed house belonging to Mrs !W. Jeffries, and occupied by Thomas Gilmore at Farnham. The building uas insured for C 750 (Guardian) and contents £2OO (State)
