THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
THE GOVERNMENT AND THE FARMER. Farmers will read the I’rime Minister’s statement to-day with particular interest, and oil the whole will take heart from it. They will find that the Government is moving to reduce wages and laying the axe to State expenditure. They hear nothing, however, of the end of land tax, while they are threatened with higher income tax and higher indirect taxation. But they will read appreciatively what Mr Forbes, a farmer himsef, lias said about the serious extent of their losses, not only of income, but of capital, and about their present precarious position. They will agree with him that “farm land is only worth the capi“talised value of what it will produce “at current prices.” and hope that he will at least impress this on the Valuation Department, since they are expected to pocket the whole or partial loss of their equity. f —Christchurch Press.
