DESERTION CHARGE

(Bn Telei/rupk —Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 12. Charged with deserting from the Turakina on February G, of last year, Charles Herbert Brogdcn, who was arrested the other day in Taihape, was convicted and ordered to pay any expenses, and forfeit any wages that might have been due to him from the ship. He was also charged with the theft of cutlery, valued at 25s taken from an hotel in Fielding, where he was employed as a cook. For this lie was fined £2, and given a week to pay in default seven days’ imprisonment.

THEFT CHARGE. WELLINGTON, February 12. Four young men, Cameron Mitchell, William Edward Ryan, William Roger Kells, and Edward Albert Napier, were to-dav found guilty by a jury of stealing £4 in money, and a gold watch and chain, to a total value of £2B. The prosecution alleged that the four accused had been drinking at varietur hotels during the afternoon of October 16, together with Adam Shaw, and that shortly after 6 p.m., Shaw was hustled up an alley-way and robbed of money and articles. In the case of Ryan a recommendation to mercy was made. The prisoners were remanded for sentence.
