AMATEUR CYCLIST
SEVERELY INJURED. (Bg Telegraph —Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 10. Taking part in the amateur cycle race at the Basin Reserve last evening, \V. Doige, aged nineteen, an engineer, crashed into a picket .fence and was severely injured. He was taken to the hospital where an X-ray examination showed his spine was fractured. At an early hour this morning his condition was reported to he serious.
The accident occurred during the final lap of the mile open handicap at a meeting staged by the Port Nicholson Amateur Road Cycling Club. The riders were spread out, and at the bend before the turn into the straight they had about 220 yards to go in order to reach the finishing line. Doidge, who had been edged over toward the picket fence, by two swervers and spills ahead of him, struck the fence with considerable force.
