UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE

A meeting of the Unemployment Board was held at the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. There were present :—Messrs A. C. Armstrong (chairman), McGavin, Harvey, Bruce and Heenan secretary.) ■ Apologies for absence were received from Messrs G. A. Perry, D. J. Evans and H. G. Coles. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. In reply the Committee’s application for Government to appoint a secretary to the local Committee, the Unemployment Board at "Wellington replied stating that all the work was being undertaken for the welfare of the unemployed, and it was to be hoped the local Committee would continue to function, making provision to carry out its own secretarial duties.—Received, and resolved to carry on as at present constituted. From Unemployment Board notifying scheme No. 5 was to come into operation on Monday Feb. 9th. Unemployed workers who are registered and mit of work will be given a few day* work each week. Borough workers to be employed in the borough, and country workers in the County. The rate of wages to be paid at the rate of ]4s per clay. This work will be given in order to provide against paying the dole. All unemployed workers must register at local Post Office and must fill in further card each fortnight they are unemployed, otherwise no record can be kept of the unemployed. Four applications for workers were received and allotted. A further grant of £SO was received from the Board making £205 received to date. As £3O of this money is still in hand it is to be hoped that those citizens requiring work done will make early application to the acting secretary of the Board, Air E. AY. Heenan.
