ALIENS IN AUSTRALIA

NEW REGULATIONS. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON January 30. The Commonwealth Government, m a communication to the New Zealand Government, states that the general rule will now be that all aliens wlio miemi residing in Australia will require to obtain a landing permit from the Department of Home Affairs. Advice t<> that effect had he sent, to the head ollicrts at Sydney of all shipping companies.

According to a report received by the Minister of Internal Affairs the Hon. P. A. do la Perrelle, it is pointed out that in the case of aliens who were not previously subject to quota restrictions or who did not require special permission to cuter Australia, it had heed decided to grant admission under the previous conditions until March 31, 1931, namely on production u'f a valid passport duly visaed where necessary, and £4O landing money, if the person is not in possession of a land-

ing permit showing that maintenance has been guaranteed. The concession applied to aliens of European race or descent (including United States citizens) other than Italians, Greeks, Jugo-Salvs, Albanians, Gzecho-Slovak-in ns, Poles, Estonians, Bulgarians, Russians and Turks. Tourists and commercial travellers will not he subject to landing permit requirements if travelling as saloon pas sengers and holding return tickets or through tickets to places beyond Australia.

“If applications for vitas for Australia,” the despatch states, “are received from aliens of these categories there will he no objection to granting vivas in cases where passport officers are reasonably satisfied as to the applieants’ bona (ides. Further consideration will be given later to the question of the temporary admission of visitors who propose to travel third class orby one class boats but in the meantime it is desirable to suggest that they first obtain permission to land from this department. This requirement, however, will not apply to persons holding through tickets for places beyond Australia, who propose to land for transhipment bv the first suitable vessel.”
