PLANET EROS

CLOSE APPROACH TO THE EARTH. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 30. .vlr C. Degg, honorary director of the Dunedin Observatory, states that the small planet Eros, discovered in 1898, is now making a remarkably close approach to the earth, the minimum distance of this planet, about IB) million miles, occurring to-day. The ocassion is unique. Never before in the history of mankind has a piano other than the moon, been consciously observed so close to the earth. A fair series of observations in which New Zealand is participating, is designed to re-compute the scale of the solar system with the assistance of the new and convenient “trig station” which Eros now supplies.

Eros is invisible to the naked eye, hut can be seen through field-glasses in the mid-hours of the night, in the constellation Sextans, south of the bright star, Regulus. The peculiarity of Eros is its variable luminosity.
